About The Artwork

A series of water lilies, diverse linocuts are a result of a mokoro trip through the Okavango Delta of Botswana in 2010. The traditional, wooden boat is used by the natives who stand and stalk through the water. People sitting in the mokoro are very close to the surface of the water. If you are not disturbed by animals, the boats float quietly through water lilies, reed, the water, and the heat. Maybe you are lucky and a little reed frog jumps into the boat, maybe on your toe, as happened to the artist twice. Here on this hand print the printing ink spilled partially on the Japanese tissue paper. Nevertheless, the artist has chosen this proof as it matches the plentifulness of the nature of the Okavango Delta, the rich wilderness of a poor developing country which is at risk. On this artwork the reed with its reflections on the water seems to hang like a surreal curtain of roots over or under the water lilies. The reflections of the reed create this room between reality and illusion. The dimensions of the print are 14 x 18.8 x 0.1 cm on Japanese tissue paper of 18.2 x 23 x 01 cm. The artwork is signed and dated in pencil. Prints of this original are available in a limited edition of 20 only.

Johanna Siegel is a scientist by training but fascinated by art. As an artist she is interested in the area of conflict between technology and nature, near and far e.g. by optical instruments but also travelling. Her artwork comprises a variety of subjects because the society, the diversity of cultures, and nature matter. The artist likes to experiment with materials and techniques like in a lab. In addition, she likes interactive performances because art and diversity create new spaces of possibility that not only question mental limitations. Usually, she works a bit longer on a special subject, a concept, quite tenaciously. Sometimes, she creates her art spontaneously, often with a sense of humor or criticism.
