About The Artwork

I made a large body of work inspired by the song "Umi says" by Mos Def. In the lyrics he sings about the trials and tribulations of finding himself as a man in the face of societal challenges, yet never looses sights of his roots and guiding life force: his Umi (grandmother). The title of this piece highlights the connection he has to his Umi but also to all those that are joined in any type of struggle. I choose this particular lyrics to highlight the direct connection I find within myself and a future me, one that has managed to address my present day strife. In some ways, it is a letter to a "better" version of myself. This is an edition of 30 prints. There are only 7 left The work itself was made in collaboration with the printmaking studio of Mark Silverberg in Thailand. This was first ever lithograph.
