This second piece from the "Crescent" series is made from Yellow Cedar and is part of the "symbiosis" concept line of sculptures. It is larger than the first and has subtle differences in form which modify the relationship between the parts and the total aesthetic. The series is a study of balance, asymmetry, harmony, relationship, and mystery. The two parts support each other structurally as a freestanding sculpture and visually providing contrast and compliment. This abstract form possesses a certain character and charm which contributes to the surrounding environment where it is placed. Perhaps it will stimulate conversation and add a calmness to the space. My inspiration for this series includes topics such as: • human perception and reality • social relationship between individuals and how it relates to the collective • discarding extravagance and searching for pure forms and contours • conflict/dissonance contained within an encompassing harmony • conflict and resolution A couple of my favourite tools for this work are the sloyd knife, Japanese skew knife, and scrapers cut to a variety of shapes. The carving block consists of 4 pieces laminated together using a hand plane to flatten each mating side and then glued together with clamps. The grain pattern is carefully matched. "Crescent No.2" is sanded to a smooth surface without the use of any wax or oil. This preserves the aromatic quality of the sculpture and the natural surface can be enjoyed in the hands. Yellow cedar has a smokey, grassy scent to it when smelled up close.
