About The Artwork

Starting with four 4x4 pieces of Western Red Cedar which I carefully selected to avoid knots, the process begins with gluing-up two pieces for each half of the sculpture and hollowing out the inside of the halves before gluing them up to make the whole block (I finish cut them with a sharp Japanese wood block printing carver's gouge). Then I proceeded to shape the outside with saws, a drawknife and knives. Deciding to knife-finish this piece, I would have to pay careful attention to optimal cut directions in each area to get clean finishing cuts and to avoid disastrous tear-outs. The white end is painted and glazed for a glossy finish and the edge is inlayed with leather. The inside is iron oxide black acrylic and the cool-burgundy is also acrylic. Finally the outside and edges are waxed. As our thought-based reality decorates our experiences with a plenitude of colours and concepts the inner void remains in its untouchable emptiness and evasive power. As we coast through time and space, gathering information and memories of events, the centre absence persists, silently knocking at our door of awakening. The preceeding is generally my inspiration for this series. With number 2, the outer and inner of the sculpture have an especially strong conceptual interchange. The enamel-like front serves to provide an ironically placed contrast to the natural wood material. As the energetic motion flows downward, so to is the placement of the hollowed point of entry and the whiteness which represents a haunting foreshadow of the black interior. The rich bronze-like colour of the waxed cedar gives this sculpture its earthy groundedness as it stand freely on 3 points of contact. Birds and marine mammals must have inspired this design naturally albeit indirectly. The leather inlay adds yet another touch from the wilderness.
