American Bison Sculpture

A majestic beast, an icon who roams the Great American Plains—what more inspiration could an artist need? This piece is a part of an endangered species series I created for my solo at Art3f Lyon. One of the most powerful animals once numbered in the millions roaming wild and free, now "ecologically extinct" is used for its hide and meat by a new alpha—us. This reflects on our species as "shepherds" of the planet, what we are capable of and how we treat our fellow creatures. The gold paint and metallic material speak about materialism, industrialism and our value system. In a more positive light, the gold speaks of the animal's priceless value. My hope is that we will choose to own art in its image instead of its dead cold hide to hang on our walls.
