About The Artwork
Created as part of the “Under The Sea” collection of work that examines the consequences of rising sea levels and how my work might physically be transformed if left on the ocean bed for many years. This hand thrown sculpted urn with handcrafted embellishments of crustacea, costal flora and rope weaves is finished in fascinating tones of blues and grey with underlying oxide reactions. Completed in October 2020, as part of a body of work titled “Under the Sea” it has a full signature on the base in addition to Richard’s trademark initials. This is a sculptural piece of work and not functional.

Richard's work is influenced by the stunning coastal setting of his studio and the connection to its industrial past. Some of Richard's work has been described as abstract impressionism using ceramics as his vehicle to evoke a feeling or essence of what exists in his coastal environment.
