BLUE JAY IN PINE Sculpture

The Blue Jay is a fairly large song bird native to North America. It's smart, aggressive, vocal, it will imitate the sound of a hawk to scatter other birds at a feeder. I use copper sheeting and wire to form my impression of this back yard rascal. The progress goes like this. Making sketches of the bird in different poses to see what looks best, and then making templates of the body parts. I will not bore you with the full details of cutting, shaping, heating and cooling, shaping! you see what I mean! every piece on this copper impression is brazed together and eventually resembles a bird on a pine limb. The colors come from heating and cooling and brazing with little control on my part. Two coats of clear lacquer were applied to keep it from oxidizing.
