Banff Sculpture

This sculpture, like all other works in my Magical Zoo series, is inspired by a unique and beautiful species of animals and is made of up-cycled materials and varnish glue. I chose this medium because of its environmental sustainability. Banff was inspired by the Black-tailed Deer, a Pacific Northwestern subspecies of Mule Deer, so called because of their large ears. They don't run as other deer, but have a particular leap that brings all four legs together and lets the animals cover a distance of up to 24 feet at a time. ​ They can reach speeds of up to 45 miles an hour, and the males shed and re-grow their antlers every year. The antlers are shed during winter, and a new pair of antlers grows by the end of summer. Each year they grow bigger, and develop new branches. Black-tailed deer prefer mountainous habitats, and typically spend their entire lives in an area of under 3 square miles.
