About The Artwork

'Cephalopod' Place several together to create a longer table. Or commission a custom table or sculpture. The glass table top sets safely and firmly on top of three arms/tentacles… . "I have always been fascinated with Cephalopods and how extremely intelligent they are. This octopus table is astoundingly real and makes any decor stand out in a jaw-dropping way. High detailed hot cast bronze, each a 'one of a kind', whimsical in every way!" Octopuses have three hearts, which is partly a consequence of having blue blood. Science is still discovering new and amazing things about these astounding creatures. They continue to amaze us! It's no coincidence I sculpted bronze octopuses. As a student way back in high school, I sculpted various octopuses in my ceramics classes. This was in the 70's and there was not all the buzz about the species, as there is today. However, there was with me. I have always felt a love for them and respect. So later on, at twenty-three years of age. I did my first bronze sculpture and it was, of course, an octopus! Even later, I did my bronze table ‘Cephalopod'. Once it hit my social media it quickly became a hit. Oddly enough, I received an amazing acknowledgment and reminder from an old high school friend. They wrote congratulating me on finally finding a way to make an octopus hold up a glass tabletop! At first, I didn't understand what he meant. Once asked, he said: "You used to hang out with me and talk about how one day you'll find a way to design and make an octopus glass-top table." It all came rushing back to me! I did it! Kirk McGuire Bronze Sculpture (415) 497-7169 Commissions Artist Statement “I have always been obsessed with nature in general, especially our oceans and the diversity of wildlife. It is my inspiration! One of the things that I find fascinating is the unusual, unique species. I have observed (‘studied’) many forms of nature and wildlife, since early childhood. Logging every nuance and detail into my ‘minds-eye’, from my passion into useful information, used later when I am creating my sculpture. Along with countless hours of research and study. I’ve always felt, I have sort of a ‘Rolodex of species’ in my memory. To be ‘tapped into’ when sculpting. I am also inspired by the bronze age of man and the ancient history of ‘hot-cast-lost wax’. I sculpt in such a way as to emphasize equilibrium, harmony, movement, and rhythm, giving my creations an 'organic' feeling. My goal when creating, is to bring forth life in a heavy inanimate object, striving to make it appear ‘as light as air’. With my sculpture, I hope to raise awareness about the land and sea around us and the animals that live here. I try to capture the ethereal beauty of sea life. I love living, and sculpting on the edge of the ocean, and hope that creating my work will help bring a little bit of the outside inside. Every living thing has beauty and I try to show this. Please respect our world, respect “Mother Earth." Biography Born an artist with a lifelong curiosity for nature. His signature trait of capturing movement and detail is from his intense love of each species. Each sculpture is in hot cast bronze, using the ancient method of casting with lost wax. Making heavy stationary objects appear 'light as air' is another of his stand out traits. In 1984, Kirk embarked on a nine-year apprenticeship at the Monterey Sculpture Centre. Perfected his bronze technique based on experience and creation. Kirk McGuire is an accomplished sculptor.
