About The Artwork
How darling is this series created by two strangers that were introduced by a mutual friend to create a unique artist collaboration? The process began like artist pen pals. From Los Angeles, California Mary Lai designed characters based on her A-Z series with iconic female musicians that were sent digitally to Soo Kyung Kwag based in Busan, Korea. Soo Kyung would translate the digital form into a dimensional doll-like character of each icon. She used special fabrics and natural dying methods to handcraft each icon then mail them back to LA. Mary individually hand wrapped vinyl records with colorful threads to create a vibrant background for each fabric characters. The 26 piece series was individually assembled into clear acrylic cases. ‘DEAR STRANGER’ is an exhibition merging art, music, and different cultures together with the belief that great things can happen when you try something new with someone new. Mary Lai is a multifaceted Korean-American artist based in Los Angeles, California. Her outlook is that “Art is a universal language that can speak to anyone” and her dreamer mindset is reflected in her vibrant contemporary artwork that aims to uplift and evoke emotion. Her scope of work includes paintings, mixed media art, digital art to large-scale murals and sculptures. She has a B.F.A. in Graphic Design and prior to her visual art journey, the seasoned designer built a career in New York for over a decade as a fashion accessories designer, including an award-winning namesake handbag collection. With over 20 years of art and design experience, Lai has worked with several notable brands including W Hotel, HBO Max, Vayner x St. Jude, American Express, SXSW, NBA Lakers/InThePaint, Snapchat and more. She has exhibited at leading art fairs & galleries worldwide and continues to explore what it means to create and curate art with impact.
