About The Artwork

According to an old legend, the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to Europe was brought by a wealthy merchant. While on a ship, when a storm broke out on the sea, the man took the picture from the crate and showed it to terrified travelers. Their prayers to Our Lady saved the ship from an imminent catastrophe. After a happy arrival in the Eternal City, the icon was placed in the church of St. Matthew. In the Napoleonic era, after the capture of Rome by the French army, the picture was lost. After more than half a century, he was found by the Redemptorist Father Michał Marchi. In 1865, Pius IX entrusted a wonderful image to the Redemptorists, saying: "Make this image known throughout the world and that you may love it." The monks, thanks to their zealous missionary activity, performed excellently with this task. The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is today the most widespread Marian image in the world. A wonderful icon has been placed in the Redemptorist church of St. St. Alfonsa in Rome (near the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore). The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is an icon depicting four holy figures: the Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus, and the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. These characters describe the letters placed in the background of the icon: MP-ΘΥ - Mary - Mother of God (on both sides of the upper part of the picture) IC-XC - Jesus Christ (on the right side of the head of the Infant Jesus) ΟΡМ - Archangel Michael (above the angel, on the left side of the viewer) OΡГ - Archangel Gabriel (above the angel, on the right). The icon has a pendant.
