About The Artwork

(Folded Paper, Sewing Threads on melamine white panel.) "Grace" is a tribute to the Princess Grace of Monaco created using our Caizong technic (see below). The assemblage of 4400 folded paper and sewing threads structures brings an impressive and unusual 3D effect. This artwork is framed in a Matte Silver Aluminium frame and protected under a plexiglass sheet. CaiZongs are traditional Chinese ornaments used during the celebration of the "Dragon Boat" festival and consist of large folded paper structures wrapped in wool. After hours of research and trials, we succeeded in creating miniaturized versions wrapped in sewing threads that we use in mural sculptures that, in a way, are reminiscent of "pixel art". All our Caizongs are created and assembled by hand in our workshop in Monaco.

NMPM's creations, taking many forms such as painting, sculpture, jewelry, animated films and writing, draw inspiration from Pop Culture, le Fantastique, Nature and their own childhood. Childhood is found both in the themes explored and in the media used such as VHS, turned obsolete but still carrying many moviegoer’s memories, or Caizongs, traditional Chinese ornaments made of paper and sewing threads that have almost fallen in oblivion. Attached to the past without being nostalgic, NMPM breath new life to these objects through contemporary artworks. Mixing both European and Asian cultures, their works surprise, entertain, and may sometimes be a little disturbing, but are always filled with an offbeat kind of poetry. Former Practical Effects artists Nan & Patrick Massobrio, aka NMPM, are a couple of professional visual artists born respectively in China & Monaco, and actually living and working in Monaco. They are members of Monaco's International Association of Arts (AIAP) and featured in the "Annuaire des Artistes". " We focus on mixing techniques, eras, cultures, and create according to our desires and what affects us. Visitors are free to find the meanings and feelings they want in our works. We just hope they’ll be surprised on discovering our creations."
