About The Artwork

Artwork : I Can : Anxiety Sculpture, 2017 Tin Can, Polymer clay 22 H x 11 W x 11 cm This sculpture is about anxiety and the feeling of breathlessness. It is about the difficulty of breathing and the sensation of suffocating. A spiraling growth of blue mushrooms is being strangled by metallic wire. Part of the ongoing series “I Can”, where I systematically grow erratic and surrealistic natural shapes onto tin cans. The dialogue between each can and growth expresses a different emotion, mood or state of the mind. They are personal and talk about myself, putting into shape what I feel or go through. They are very intuitive work where I let my hands and the clay decide where to go after a rough sketch of the emotion I want to materialize.

Inspired by natural forms, Stéphanie Kilgast’s artwork is an ode to nature and its current biodiversity. Plants, mushrooms, insects and other animals encounter in a vibrant swirl of colors under her brush or sculpting tools. Since 2017, in her series “Discarded Objects”, she grows colorful organic sculptures on manufactured objects, celebrating the beauty of nature in a dialogue with humanity, questioning the lost balance between human activities and nature. Her work has a cheerful post apocalyptic feel to it, a reassuring reminder that nature has the capacity to grow back, if we only let it. Her work has been exhibited in North America, Asia, Australia and Europe. French, born in 1985, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, currently resides in Vannes, France.
