I’ve lost it completely. Quick, get me a gun! It is a sad reflection of our ‘modern’ society, and the art world in particular, that one of the most iconic and gifted artists of ours, or any era, died in abject poverty and utter desolation, whilst the least talented plagiarist has become the world’s wealthiest in his own lifetime. If anything, it proves that art experts who constantly preach about talentless dross, know precisely nothing about the genre they represent and almost everything you need to know about selling garbage to gullible punters for huge amounts of money. In any other language they would be called swindlers. The ability of the ‘connoisseur’ to rationalise contemporary art that we all know is utter trash is legendary. Of course, large canvasses of coloured spots, produced ‘en masse’ by an anonymous army of nameless assistants and supposedly signed by a self promoting ‘plagiarist’ are truly wonderful examples of current creative, original and talented art. Hopefully, not. Sadly, unfortunately, this is a classic reflection of our ‘lets pretend’ society. You know its dross, I know its dross, but the art establishment would have you believe that it is actually genuinely talented work, depressingly similar to the vast quantities of ‘contemporary garbage’ currently on display throughout galleries worldwide. As with a huge proportion of our existing social culture, the order of the day is to dumb down. Where once the ambition was to aspire to excellence and perfection, today the opposite is true and any facile or irrelevant object can be labeled art, and frequently is. Lets pop down to the local Council tip and grab some trash. Stick it in a gallery and confound people with intellectual verbal diarrhea regarding its provenance and bingo, we’ve made a fortune! That just about sums up your typical art expert, your national contemporary galleries and, sadly, today's society. What is truly depressing is that the general public is being seduced by this deception. As long as some untalented art ‘celebrity’ signs it and an equally deceitful ‘art expert’ validates it then there is money ‘in them thar hills!’ No wonder Vincent van Gogh went mad. Try being a genuinely talented, creative and original artist in today's environment and see where it gets you! Try talking to the large, nationally established art galleries and experience not just total frustration but a web of utter corruption the like of which you wouldn’t believe. The only motivation of your typical gallery curator is making huge amounts of money for minimum effort, regardless of the absolute rubbish they are exhibiting. No wonder the suicide statistics have risen consistently every year. Quick. Get me a gun.
