This curious gull is made with a chicken-wire base, layering various wires - thicker garden wire, colourful electrical cable, and delicate shiny craft wire - to build up the bird, similar to the way pencil lines create a complete form: the overall piece becomes a three-dimensional sculptural drawing. This free-standing yellow-legged gull was inspired by the opportunistic gulls we now see everywhere, not just by the coast; I love their confident strutting along the high street, and can’t help but think of of ice creams and sandy sandwiches, their squawking calls reminding me of growing up by the sea-side. The “drawn” wire allows me to create a real sense of movement. My aim is for the materials (including salvaged wires and plastic netting) to highlight the threat of pollution and rubbish that our birds face, whilst simultaneously showing how we can reuse materials, diverting them from potentially damaging landfill, and instead creatively upcycling them into art. Birds are a vital element of nature and are accessible to all, even those who live in the most urban of environments.

Worcester artist Sarah Dukes creates sculptures of birds and hares. Starting with chicken-mesh for the body, she builds up the details with a variety of wires (many salvaged and reclaimed), such as rusty garden wire, paper florist twine, and vivid electrical cable, allowing the various thicknesses to become the lines that make up the form. Passionate about protecting our planet from the disastrous impacts of climate change, Sarah recognises the need to increase people’s love with our natural world. Birds are a vital element of nature and are accessible to all, even those who live in the most urban of environments. During lockdown, Sarah began making sculptures of the birds in her garden - with a reel of wire found at the back of the shed, she made armatures of blue tits and blackbirds, sparrows and robins, using the wire to ‘draw’ the three dimensional shapes of these friendly garden visitors.
