John the Baptist Sculpture

The relief is one of eight (1 \ 8) originals! The author is quite inspired by the image of the last and "greater than the prophets", the ascetic and hermit, the "angel of the flesh", John the Baptist. His life was full of drama, trials, martyrdom, and most importantly, he always spoke the truth, even under threat of death, and ruthlessly rebuked sin. Herod himself was imprisoned for rebuking Herod, and because of Herodias' whim, his head was executed and placed on a half-bowl among the feast. From this "strange" compositional move - two heads of one character are depicted in relief. The cross in the Baptist's hand testifies that he baptized the people and foretold the coming of the Messiah. Its barely visible wings are a reference to the metaphor of an angel in the human body, as it is called in verse.
