MUDSTONE SHOAL FOR COLES 2018 Sculpture

‘Mudstone’ is my name for the pieces of clay which I collect on the beach. My belief is that rough seas break chunks off the underwater clay banks and every tide these are swept up and down the 200 yards of beach. Eventually they disintegrate – hence the colour of the sand. However, pieces like the ones I’ve used for this commission can be found before they are broken down and preserved. They vary in colour and texture due to the different clays deposited, and their shapes are the result of natural ‘sanding’ and attrition. I picture these pieces of clay as they’re tumbled in the surf and, given their shapes, I think of them being a bit like fishes. So I arrange them as if they’re forming a shoal.
