About The Artwork

I enjoy the dichotomy of glass, it is both strong and fragile, rewarding and challenging. Anything you do to an area of surface affects the whole and there is much depth in that. For this piece the tall slender dominant glass pane in seated in a fluid yet solid lignum vitae driftwood as its' base. On the pane there are oncidium orchids, ginger lilies, anthuriums, banana leaves, other tropical plants indigenous to Jamaica and the beautiful Caribbean Sea. However something is slightly askew, for example the ginger lilies face an odd direction. The focal point of Marooned in Paradise may seem to be nature, the play of light, movement, texture and colour. However, it is more a human perspective acknowledging the unprecedented times that we are presently living in. It is based on my personal experience of being marooned in Jamaica due to covid-19. In March 2020 borders began to close and I could not return to Japan where I lived. I was displaced. While I love Jamaica and draw strength from its beauty and ability to heal me, it was not intended to be my home at this point in my life. This feeling of being uprooted is not unique to me since others are in similar situations. As I tried to find a solution, I was told by the powers that be, wait for covid to end and for the old norm to return. At some point I decided to change my perspective and make the best of the present while readjusting to the new norm. Focus on the silver lining. I executed the piece using the reverse German technique. My hope is each time you walk around it, it says something new.

Artist Statement          Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Lee-Ann Haslam lives and works between Japan and Jamaica. She studied art at The University of ITSON, Sonora, Mexico; Fordham, NY and Tokyo University of the Arts, Japan. She completed her Masters program with honors in Creative Glass at the Tokyo University of the Arts as a national Monbukagakusho scholar. Her works are rooted in glass, transcending various media with the themes of human perspective, light, colour, nature and emotions. She believes art is never stagnant but always finding new forms of expression for connection. For that reason she shows great respect for the dichotomy of glass in her work and states, "glass is both strong and fragile, rewarding and challenging. Anything you do to an area of surface affects the whole and there is much depth in that." Haslam’s works have been exhibited worldwide including Jamaica, Mexico, America and Tokyo. She has done many commissions while working with glass, for such reputable businesses as Jamaica’s second largest insurance company, Jamaica International Insurance Company (JIIC), The Embassy of Jamaica, Japan, and for notable art enthusiasts and patrons, Pat Ramsey, the former Director of the Centre for the Arts UTech and Mutual Life Galleries, the Ambassador of China, Wayne McCook, and H.I.H Princess Hitachi of Japan, to name a few. She has also exhibited with philanthropic organizations such as The United Nations, and elSOUL, Kyushu. She has been featured in International magazines, media and Newspapers such as The Jamaica Observer, Open Road Arts and Travel Magazine, Black Experience Japan, ReggaeSteem, Jamaican Information Center, 50 Voices Japan (TV program), and The  Flotilla  360, a   news, Art  &   Entertainment  Magazine  on  the African  Diaspora   authentic  perspective.
