'Metamorph' was created in porcelain paperclay with a terra sigillata finish. The combined strength of these materials allows the creation of a larger-scale ceramic artwork, yet still incorporating thin layers of clay. As an artist Hayley-Jay Daniels' main focus is on the creation of figuratively based ceramic sculptures. Her artworks explore the complexities and variants in gender identity, through expressions of gesture, posture, stillness and movement, and the utilization of symbolic imagery from protective armour and clothing. Hayley’s current work investigates the ways in which as human beings, we both hide layers of our identity, gender and core self, and yet leave fragmented elements, resonances, behind us as we move and evolve through life. This artwork embraces the interplay between a large scale hand, the illusion of being cast from metal and the actual fragility of the porcelain itself. In the alteration of scale, and the illusion of a metallic construction, viewers more instinctively engage with it as a 'male' hand, whilst it is in fact an enlarged sculpture of the artists own hand.

Born and educated in the UK, a passionate artist since a child, I initially trained as an Interior Designer. After a successful career, I retrained in ceramics completing 7 years full time study at the Universities of Bristol and Cardiff. As an artist my main focus is on the creation of figuratively based ceramic sculptures. My artworks explore the complexities and variants of gender identity, through the expressions of gesture, posture and movement. Symbolic images of protective armour, clothing and the use of multiple layers are often central to many of my artworks. My artworks are created in both porcelain and stoneware paperclay. The combined use of these materials enable the creation of larger artworks that are constructed using thin layers of clay. I mainly use hand-building and free form sculpting techniques. I work from my studios in the South West of France. My artworks have been exhibited widely, and they are in collections throughout the UK, USA, Holland, Germany and within France.
