About The Artwork

Inspired by the traditional Korean shell-shaped jewelry bag, I modify shapes and materials to create a pile of small containers. The containers symbolize seeds, pods, buds, and bubbles, all of which hold both tangible and intangible things -- things which have yet to be found or realized. These small containers are then connected together with pins, threads, and fasteners and Installed with a motion sensor light. When the viewer comes close, the artwork turns on the light to greet the viewer.

Un Jung Lee is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, performer, and designer currently based in New Jersey and New York. Her artistic practice delves into the intricate relationship between personal experience and deep introspection, while exploring the intersection of individual identity and collective consciousness within social and cultural contexts. Lee employs a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, text, installation, video, and multimedia to articulate her exploration of these themes. Lee's artistic talent and unique perspective have garnered international recognition. In 2000, she was invited to participate in two significant exhibitions: the special exhibition of the Gwangju Biennale and SIPAF 2000. These opportunities further fueled her passion and artistic development, ultimately leading her to relocate to the United States to pursue her career. She held her first solo exhibition, titled MABI (Made in America by Koreans), in the US at Gallery_010 in Texas in 2004. Since then, her work has been featured in various international exhibitions, including the Saatchi Art Fair in New York, Apartment Gallery in Pennsylvania, Fort Worth Community Arts Center in Texas, 621 Gallery in Florida, Cambridge Art Association in Massachusetts, Upstream People Gallery in Nebraska, Miami University in Ohio, and All Gallery in Connecticut.
