This piece is currently on loan to the City of Palm Desert, CA until 2022. Previously it was on loan to the City of West Hollywood, CA. It stands 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide. It depicts a desperate man at the bottom of the sculpture looking up with an aching expression reaching high above his head grasping the wrist of another man with all of his strength. At the top of the piece is a man reaching down with one hand grasping the wrist of the lower man and pulling with all his might. While the upper man pulls the lower man up, he looks higher reaching outward with his free arm. What he is reaching for is not stated in the work and is left for the viewer to determine. The focus of this piece and what is about eye level with the average viewer is the grasp between the two men. Visibly it is an extraordinarily strong and unbreakable bond, it is also the single support between the lower and upper figures. The design of the piece implies a particular statement. Although obviously the upper figure is pulling the lower figure up and quite possibly saving him; the lower figure is also the support of the upper figure and without him the upper figure would fall. The work is a statement for the shared destiny of man, both the weak and the powerful. Neither can be free without the other, so a common respect must be maintained and held for each other. The work addresses a very large social issue and that is the false idea that mankind can be divided into groups some having more human value than others. Ideas to the contrary allow for prejudice, murder and all manner of atrocities. The work goes further in its statement by making it clear in order for any one man to make it out he must bring along his fellows no matter how impossible it may seem.

To me the quality of art is determined by its ability to communicate an idea. Large or small, simple or complex, it doesn't matter as long as the communication is there. When it comes to my work I try to apply this idea. I want my sculpture to clearly say something to the viewer that acknowledges their personal reality, something they see in my art that mirrors something within themselves. Maybe it's an experience they had or an idea they hold dear, whatever the point of reality may be I want my artwork to connect with that and duplicate it. Un-intentionally I often find the communication that I am placing in my sculpture is one of hope, breaking bounds and becoming better. This just seems to be the communication that inspires me to create. I feel that those ideas are universal and no matter the person, everyone has felt the need for hope, or the desire to break free and improve. These are the types of natural urges that make mankind worthwhile. My art exists to acknowledge and strengthen these ideas and all of the successes and hardships that come with them.
