This sculpture suggests the human potential for liberation from traditional ideas, particularly those that involve cruelty and in this case, the entrapment of animals. Humans have long kept animals in cages but just because something is traditional, certainly does not mean that it is good - from an ethical standpoint. This figure has indeed "lost her head", implying that to keep birds in cages is a kind of madness.

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
