A decorative thrown-and-altered piece made from Black Mountain clay with heavy-grit grog, and a crawling, white glaze around the rim. Inside is coated with an oil-based gilding size. I have developed the technique for these pieces over many years. The work involves heavy use of a blowtorch while working the wet clay. The Riven series draws inspiration from textures in the natural world. It also reflects the conversation that I had with the clay while producing this piece. The contrasting combinations of fire and wet clay, and of the soft clay with the hard grog, work together to lead to a great number of fascinating shapes and textures. NOTE on use: Sizing is water-resistant, but I do not recommend using this piece as a vase. It works best as a display and conversation piece. Bottom is sealed with resin, and is painted with gilding size. From the artist's private collection.

With every time that I touch clay, it responds, but it also has a mind of its own. I love to listen to the clay, and to help it become the form it 'wants'. The resulting art piece is a record of the conversation with the clay. These are more than just happy accidents; my works are the result of carefully 'listening' to the clay, and guiding it to form. My explorations are focused on form, and comprise several series or veins of exploration. I am educated in ceramics from both the technological standpoint (BS, MS, and PhD in Ceramic/Materials Engineering/Science) and from the artistic standpoint (Master Classes, Workshops). This combined background provides me with great freedom in exploring form to the fullest capability of the clay.
