Slate Outcropping with Leaflines Sculpture

This mixed-media sculpture is a combination of cast iron, wax and natural slate stone. The base is fabricated steel which encases a digital print of magnified leaf veins. This work strives to harmonize the natural textures and shapes of the stone with somewhat geometric and patterned forms. The cast iron form is filled with semi-translucent wax, which emphasizes the core interior of this form. The image of leaf veins are intended to heighten the similarities between natural and man-made patterns. The greatest source of inspiration for my work is the natural environment. I am fascinated by patterns found in nature. These patterns often signify growth, division, decay, movement, and attraction. The natural balance that can be found between organic chaos and systematic geometry especially intrigues me.
