Playfully regarded as it's companion piece "Here Comes The Sun's" younger sibling, and created alongside that larger piece, Sunshine In My Pocket includes a number of tiny daisies and coneflowers mounted atop a spiraling network of vines. Smaller than it's larger companion, but no less complex, the piece is sure to bring more than a pocketful of enduring joy to your home or garden. The piece was created using a variety of carbon steel and stainless steel materials including steel rod and pipe, salvaged steel components, flatware, and steel plate. Hundreds of individual shaped components were joined using thousands of individual welds using MIG welding techniques, resulting in a unique, organic texture which conceals the tremendous amount of welding necessary to create this piece. Each individual component is coated in an epoxy primer before being base coated, then top coated in Axalta's (formerly Dupont's) Imron 3.5 Urethane finishing system. Matthew has developed an innovative spray technique of blending multiple colors wet in the spray booth, resulting in beautiful ombre finishes blending through several colors on each bloom. The Imron finishing system has been widely used in the marine and aerospace industries, and Matthew's work is intended for permanent installation outdoors in any climate. Matthew's work has been installed in public and private settings spanning the Eastern US, with privately owned work displayed nationwide as well as in the Middle East and Europe. The base plate of this piece is predrilled to allow for mounting to any suitable substrate.
