The King of the Forest (The Stag) Sculpture

This piece was inspired by the myths of the ancient Celtic god, Cernunnos, and stories of the horned man, the Green Man, the lord of Summer, and ruler of nature. He is oft reported to take the form of a stag, and appears in similar form throughout many primitive, tribal cultures all over the world. I chose to work with wood simply because I love the feel of it in my hands, and the process of preparing the material for burning, and finishing it afterward--the intimate, hands on contact is what is addictive for me, as the artist, and I believe that it elevates what otherwise would have been a regular ole' ink drawing. I'm also exploring pattern, and the repetition of pattern in my work--for me, it's a way to have all the detail I want, and yet maintain some form of harmony to give a bit of rest for the viewer's eye, and, also, a way to control the flow of the composition. I am heavily inspired by Art Deco and Art Nouveau lately, it seems... I'm hoping that the viewer is drawn in by what, at first sight, appears to be a blur of detail that only makes sense when you draw closer, or touch it. I want there to be something new for their eyes to catch every time they look at it, so it's always new in some way.
