Initially I found a challenge in being surrounded by wool and the question: Could it possibly be used as a material for an artwork? If so, how? The balls of wool evoke for me the memory, as a child, of being surrounded by enthusiastic family knitters sitting comfortably in their chairs. The sculpture is an amusing nod to those knitters and the evocative way wool conjures up cosy, warm memories. Further, the method of arrangement of the balls is inspired by pointillism. In essence I have used the chair as an appropriate domestic “canvas” to create an amusing, tactile, artistic memorandum of the past. Inspiration has been gained from Seurat, Mach and Matisse.

It is titled and signed underneath and has been treated with a fabric protector.

About The Artwork

Initially I found a challenge in being surrounded by wool and the question: Could it possibly be used as a material for an artwork? If so, how? The balls of wool evoke for me the memory, as a child, of being surrounded by enthusiastic family knitters sitting comfortably in their chairs. The sculpture is an amusing nod to those knitters and the evocative way wool conjures up cosy, warm memories. Further, the method of arrangement of the balls is inspired by pointillism. I look for the potential decorative aspects contained in the the subject I wish to paint. Then it is about the process of creating an artist's viewpoint, rather than realism itself. This involves the elements of shape, thinking in terms of an overall pattern and then creating a pleasant mood through choosing colour(s). The aim is simply to enjoy the process of creating and hopefully another viewer of the artwork will have an enjoyable experience also. I think the best interpretation of what I attempt to produce is contained in a quotation from Matisse: “What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter - a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.”
