About The Artwork

A day of fishing // The octopus // A surprise while they feed the beast // A good snack. The little teddy bear and the old cricket come from my childhood memories to articulate stories and fantasies. For this piece I was lucky enough to receive a particularly dark mansonia (African walnut) wood and its contrast with the ramin wood is magnificent. Look at the wood used as the base of each scene: it's also mansonia, but much lighter. This is a small-sized work, delicate in its details and complex in its three-dimensionality, made with solid woods (woods two millimeters thick) of ramin and mansonia (African walnut). 5mm mansonia. for the base of each strip (vignette) and Lebanon cedar veneer on both sides of the main board. This piece has 16 magnets, eight of them hidden, to join the four pieces to the wooden base. Wood cut with laser light and glued very carefully. This is the fourth piece made in 2021 with this design (the first three were discarded for various reasons). This piece is part of the WoodArt collection. The author only creates ten reproductions of each design in this collection, always on demand and using different wood combinations. They may also use alternative materials like acrylic or even alter the format if the customer desires, but always with a maximum of ten reproductions per design. https://www.tomasbases.com/wood-art/the-octopus The shipment of this piece is made inside a cardboard box, protected inside with extra-firm foam (density of 40 kg per cubic meter) and outside with a plastic cover. I recommend not exposing this piece to direct sunlight, high temperatures or places with high humidity: solid wood is a living and delicate material that must be protected. If necessary, any dust that may accumulate can be removed with a soft brush. The piece was only polished with natural wax: it does not contain varnishes or dyes. The piece has a built-in hanger on the back (not shown in the photo), in case you want to hang it on a wall.

With more than fifty years, artistic creation continues to be, for me, the search for windows open to the fantasy of a place of my own but strange, dreamlike and unreal. I am accompanied by the strong impact of the pop culture of the 80s: comics, cinema, music, illustration, video clips, as well as the cultural and historical imprint of the city in which I grew up, Barcelona. My career as an illustrator for thirty years has fueled my interest in investigating and making use of multiple plastic and narrative languages, always very close to digital tools. And although in the last decade I have been developing various projects of my own, it is since 2020 that I decide to separate myself from my professional field to focus solely on the development of my own projects such as the one that currently occupies me: the creation of three-dimensional works made with wood. A slow process that begins with the creation of the drawing that I then submit to a complex digital technique, to finally cut with laser light the innumerable pieces of wood that I will join to achieve the final effect. Solid woods, in turn, are selected with the design in mind; sanded, polished and prepared for the delicate cutting process. And while it's hard to appreciate the power of these three-dimensional illustrations through photos, I hope your instincts make up for it. How do I make my production? For a year I make a few designs (creation of drawings and digital adaptation). I buy, select and prepare the wood, cut it, assemble the pieces and give them the final finishes. The learning process of the 2022 collection led me to repeat almost all the pieces: I could only finish one piece for each design (except in the African mask collection). My intention for this year is to be able to finish several reproductions of each new design.
