About The Artwork

The Twine Collector is an original piece of artwork made out of string from my straw baler and a wooden post from an old barn that was taken down in 1950. As with all my sculptures, every item used is found on the farm. Each year when the grass reaches maturity in my meadows it is mowed and left to dry in the sun, to remove any moisture, before being baled up and fed to the horses. The baler is a machine pulled by the tractor that picks up this dried grass, compresses it into rectangles and ties them tightly so the grass is easy to handle and move. It is from offcuts and unused lengths of this bailing string that the head of the twine collector is constructed. I have a collection of beautiful pieces of wood in my barn and my favourite in terms of charcater and beauty are from a row of wooden buildings that my Grandfather dismantled back in 1950. The base of The Twine Collector is made from a lintel that came from one of these buildings. My Grandfather always claimed to have once seen a map that showed these buildings on the farm dating from the year 1760 so we believe the wooden plinth to be at least that old. In the 65 years or so since the building was demolished this piece of wood has been used on the farm for various jobs before it became a plinth to The Twine Collector. It stopped the combine rolling away when it had an engine fire in 1989, it was used for about three years to prop open a chicken shed door in the 1990's and my father once used it to trap an angry pig with an abscessed tooth in his sty whilst he called the vet. I love using items from the farm to create my artwork as it is a deep part of what makes me who I am, and I hope that as a wooden plinth this piece of wood will see another century or so of use and maybe, one day, will be utilised for a different job in a different life, as it has many times in the past.

1. I am a farmer by trade in a perfect corner of East Anglia. 2. I create my artwork when the curvature of time and space allow - and all the animals have been checked. 3. Painting a portrait whilst ploughing is practically impossible. 4. I look on every day with delight at the similarities between agriculture and art.
