About The Artwork

This work symbolizes a struggle and pursuit of new love. Even when circumstances are complicated love can prevail. This is an original ice cast bronze sculpture. The hearts symbolize two people in love in pursuit of reaching the moon: thus the saying, I love you to the moon and back. I made the work in wax form first utilizing the lost wax process to turn it into bronze. Upon its return from the foundry, I grinded off all of the sprue scars and hand worked the metal with many air tools. I "chased" away any metal defects and blended the work where the welds met to make it appear seamless and establish visual "flow". I then sandblasted the work and prepared it for patina. Heating the work up with an oxy acetylene torch, I used a combination of traditional chemicals. The first one used is liver of sulfur which turns the piece black and is then rubbed off by hand using sandpaper and scotch brite to create contrast and keep the blacks in the linear crevices. The second chemical applied hot is ferric nitrate which brings out the works gold tones and hues of subtle earthy browns. Cupric nitrate makes the green hues on the water of the work. It is applied hot, one brushstroke at a time. When the work cools I mix in a variety of metal stains to add even more color. As the colors set, I reheat the bronze and apply wax to the work which protects it and brings out a nice shine.

I am a bronze sculptor. I turn ice into metal! Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by ice formations found in nature. After years of experimentation I figured out a way to accomplish this task using the "lost wax" method. I make a wax mold of the ice and transform it into bronze. Then the pieces are sandblasted, welded, and metal imperfections are "chased" away using grinders and hand tools. I strive for the highest level of craftsmanship and pay utmost attention to detail. Each of my sculptures are one of a kinds. Like no other!
