About The Artwork

This stoneware tea vessel was handthrown on the wheel and fired at 1,250°C. my greatest fascination in pottery lies with a vessel as simple as the bowl. the bowl is the most ancient, natural and iconic dish of mankind. it reminds us of two hands formed together to scoop water - an act our species performed in a life saving daily routine for millions of years. from these water scooping hands the potters invented the bowl - an utensil you would never dare to spare, because even in the most dire circumstances you will feed yourself and your beloved ones. thus I created a bowl to symbolize the equally nourishing and charming aspect in its unique aesthetic simplicity. what can I offer the world ? in that short period of time we call a man's life, what can one do ? creating beauty, I decided, was the best thing I could do. so with all my humble ambition as a human being I strive to create beauty. the materials I use are earth and fire. the process of shaping the earth on the potter's wheel and using fire to render those earthen forms into fossils of beauty touches the realm of alchemy. my work specializes in hand crafted, high temperature stoneware pottery for daily use, combining usefulness of table ware and aesthetics of ceramic arts. the objective is to re-invent the human culinary living spaces through ceramic arts and crafts. my bowls, mugs and jugs aim at enriching and refining our daily experience of eating and drinking, wheras my vases invite you to relax in the uncontrived state of natural beauty. each piece is created in a slow and intensive hand made process that produces the highest quality of ceramic ware, finished with stoneware glaze and fired at least at 1,200°C (2,192°F) - transforming clay into vitrified stoneware - a material I call "fossil of beauty" because of its longevity and robustness. In fact archeological findings reveal stoneware items that date from 2,500 B.C. - so this is artwork that might last for 4,000 years! the principles of my modus operandi are: stay simple and useful with one aim: transformation of earth and fire into fossils of beauty form and function are one: I don't apply special decorative elements, but allow the fire to play with the stoneware glazes. come as one and stay unique: the objects grow organically in the potters hands. I refuse the industrial idea of assembling different pieces together. worship the beauty of natural materials: earth, fire and natural stoneware glazes (silica for vitrification and various metal oxides). praise the virtue of human skill and the dignity of craftsmanship. I am strongly opposed to automatisation, so I would never use molds.
