ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This mixed media collage acrylic painting on canvas is part of a series of pieces I created in reaction to the horrific fires in Australia, in particular, but elsewhere on our planet. Because I have spent a lot of time visiting "down under" and have friends there, my anguish and sorrow went deep. Besides donating money for rebuilding, I felt compelled to paint some of the animal species that were destroyed by the fires. In this piece, a bird sits on a branch looking down upon the orange/red/purple sky as its world burns. I used a variety of collage materials to build texture in this piece but it is somewhat abstract. I fear for the future of our planet and the best way I could express my feelings was by painting. Looking at my painting reminds me over and over again, how fragile our world is and how we must all do our part to take care of it for ourselves and our children.

Myra Evans is a visual artist living and working in Toronto, Canada and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. After retiring from a long, rewarding career as a high school teacher and administrator, Myra discovered the joys of painting, especially using water media. After 15 years of creating impressionistic water colour portraits, she is now experimenting with acrylics, pastels ,hand made paper, collage/texturizing techniques, inks and watercolours. Exploring abstraction using figurative images with alternative mediums has been an on-going adventure. Her time and energy has been focused on developing as a painter. Art making for Myra is a life long process.
