About The Artwork

One of the biggest occasions in a child’s life is the first day in school. It is a big celebration in which the family gathers and the child receives the biggest incentive for enrolment in school: the Zuckertüte, a huge cone filled with sweets and presents. I am in the middle in a white dress, my mother’s hands around my shoulders, holding my sugar cone. To my left there is my cousin and my little sister, both received a smaller sugar cone so they don’t feel excluded in the joy of sweet indulgence. We are gathered in front of our house and our Trabant, the typical GDR car made it into the picture, too. This painting captures a tradition in German life and shows the importance of family life in the German Democratic Republic in 1986. Susanne Wawra, Familienaufstellung 1986 (Family Congregation 1986), 2016, Oil, Acrylic and Image Transfer on Patterned Fabric, Mixed Media Painting, 40 x 30 cm.
