About The Artwork

This is an encaustic mixed media painting of abstract flowers. Found objects are adhered and collage elements are incorporated. The stems of the flowers are iridescent gold for an ethereal feeling. The painting is framed with a 1.75" handmade black wood frame. Picture wire is attached to the back for ease of hanging. ABOUT ENCAUSTIC: Encaustic is a mixture of beeswax, damar resin, and oil paints. Wax is melted and applied wet onto a wood board. Each layer is fused with a blow torch to merge the levels together. The translucency of the wax allows for great depth and textures. SIGNATURE: My full signature, date, and title of the painting are on the back. LONGEVITY: Encaustic painting has a long history, dating back to the 5th Century B.C. The word encaustic means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the paint. Beeswax is impervious to moisture, it will not deteriorate, it will not yellow or darken. Encaustic paintings do not have to be varnished or protected by glass. HOW TO CARE: • Hang and store at normal room temperatures. Avoid freezing and extremely hot temperatures; wax will melt at 150°F / 65°C. • Keep all artwork out of direct sunlight. • During the first 6-12 months, as the wax cures, an encaustic painting may develop bloom. Bloom is a naturally occurring hazy white residue. It may also occur if a painting is exposed to cold. Bloom can easily be removed by buffing the surface of the painting. • Encaustic paintings can be buffed to a high gloss using a soft, lint-free cloth or pantyhose. If the original sheen has become dull over time, it can be brought back by repeating the buffing process. • Once an encaustic painting has fully cured and hardened, it will shed dust and dirt more readily.

Britt Hallowell is an award winning mixed media artist and her paintings can be found in galleries, restaurants and collector's homes around the globe. Her encaustic paintings are highly textural and usually focus on organic themes such as nature, animals and trees. She uses beeswax, damar resin (a natural tree sap that acts as a hardening agent), oil paint, india inks, alcohol inks, collage, and antique found objects within her artwork. Each layer is carefully applied and heated with a blowtorch to fuse the layers together. The results are multi-dimensional and can never be duplicated. “I love creating heavy textures because it allows me to create minimalist designs with bold contrasts that are simple and yet very intricate in their nature.” Her goal is to evoke positive emotions through use of imagery, color and tactile sensations. Britt tries to create art that is warm and inviting for the viewer. Britt is a self-taught artist. “I did not want to be taught someone else’s way to create. I’m not constricted by rules, but instead I’m able to try anything and everything and learn from my own successes and failures rather than someone else’s. Oftentimes it’s the mistakes that make something beautiful!” In addition to selling through galleries, Britt travels the country to display her artwork at approximately 15 art shows a year. If you'd like to see her work in person, you can check the "Events" section to see where she will be displaying this year. Britt lives in Columbus Ohio with her husband, daughter and dog. When not painting or exhibiting at art festivals, she loves to travel the world, decorate and drink a good glass of wine (or two...).
