This piece was inspired by the words of Toni Morrison, "When artists get to work." The tone and shock of this election felt like a movie reel more than reality. The images and words used in this mixed media work were taken from news and social media as the country seemed to spiral into chaos. As a women, I feel we have moved the clock backwards and the woman waving the flag in the image reminded me of days of the past. I feel it is the artist's responsibility to speak out so that our voices are heard.

I have been a working artist for over 20 years. After growing up outside of Chicago, I moved to New York, where I received my master's of art from the prestigious program through NYU and the International Center of Photography. When I returned to Chicago, I continued to work on my art, writing and curating all while raising 4 kids. My work focuses on the effects of genetics, the mother/daughter relationships, and the body. I explore themes of cancer as a metaphor in my own work as well as the biennial exhibit I curate, Voices & Visions, Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease. The mind, body and spirit connections and separations echo the theme in art that out of darkness comes light.
