I was inspired to use the iconic superhero Wonder Woman, or Princess Diana, as the main image for this artwork. Wonder Woman imbues the qualities I think are important for a woman: fairness, strength, courage, humility and kindness. Apart from meeting all this criteria, Wonder Woman also stands for so many important characteristics of womanhood. She has been an icon and role model for women over the last five decades. Images within the artwork include twenty of the most influential women in history. These images are juxtaposed on real pages from Playboy magazines and an 1800’s Pin-up book. The contrast of imagery I find evocative. There is a twenty first woman, my mother, who has been one of the most influential people in my life. Other imagery can be seen in Wonder Woman’s clothing. Her costume bodice is rich with graphics depicting women’s quest for equality, corporate identity and career opportunities. Her underwear focuses on her femininity – her reproductive anatomy, her fertility and the ever ticking biological clock. Elsewhere is Rosie the Riveter, the “we can do it” symbol of feminine capability born during World War 11. Finally, in homage to my two sisters and their daughters, look into my eyes.

I am an Australia artist living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a collage artist I am fascinated with the use of color, pattern and texture and try to combine these elements in my work in an innovative and exciting way. My technique is still evolving and employs an exploratory and playful process that can incorporate costuming, set design, photography, graphic manipulation, collage and painting. I also hide images within my paper collages, creating a second level of interest beyond the initial image.
