About The Artwork

This new work is inspired by music. As I work in my studio, the rhythm reverberates through my body, and the lyrics seep into my soul. It enables me to let go of conscious thoughts or judgements and just work from within. The 48 x 60 unstretched canvas panel hangs from clips or wire. The abstract figure is surrounded by the words “I Belong With You”, yet she stands alone strong on her own. The pair to this piece consists of the other half, “You Belong With Me.” The piece is mixed media using acrylics, paper, string, pastels and metallic paint and glitter.

I have been a working artist for over 20 years. After growing up outside of Chicago, I moved to New York, where I received my master's of art from the prestigious program through NYU and the International Center of Photography. When I returned to Chicago, I continued to work on my art, writing and curating all while raising 4 kids. My work focuses on the effects of genetics, the mother/daughter relationships, and the body. I explore themes of cancer as a metaphor in my own work as well as the biennial exhibit I curate, Voices & Visions, Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease. The mind, body and spirit connections and separations echo the theme in art that out of darkness comes light.
