About The Artwork

A trip to Israel as an artist for a residency was the inspiration. When traveling, I absorb the culture, food, landscape etc, and deconstruct it and make abstracted collages. The collages may have a representational aspect and are meant to be an amalgam of the experience. The collages occur fairly intuitively using the materials available to me and editing when the final product is complete. Because traveling at times is like music in that it is ephemeral --it enters and effects me but I leave and it is gone except for the ways it may change me. Collage strikes me as an ephemeral medium . It has neither the weight or heft of oil painting. Not frivolous but buoyant and transitory. I want the viewer to feel a sense of knowing and place. But in using paper most of which are created by me and working abstractly it implies the sense of a place existing but yet being transitory as if it may not be the same when next I visit. Perhaps the viewer may find symbols, maps or colors that may remind them of Israel or a special place. Some of the decisions regarding materials and placement were dictated by composition and design concerns others by what materials I was surrounded by. In my collages I am fascinated by the patterns and geometry that I creat by the use of negative space. That is part of the challenge.
