About The Artwork
ā Leaving the theater after seeing a performance of "Book of Mormon," I turned back to a commotion. I caught a quick glance of a woman on her back, with only her legs visible as two people crouched over her and one stood. That image, along with a line from the play, "You must just like to see me cry," stuck deep in my psyche and I made a crude drawing the next day. The canvas sat around for a while. About a year or two later, after my daughter was born, I went through a period of depression and anxiety and began working on this piece again. Eventually, what came out was a picture of what loss and death and hopelessness and hope does to my insides - we're all just ghosts in the world, flitting this way and that. (Alternate title: Grist for the Mill) NOTE ON TITLE: I was having trouble naming this piece, as I wanted the title to be something like "Death in America" (although that was too literal), but nothing was coming. Listening to the radio one morning, I heard the snippet: "... died of cancer in Idaho," and knew that was it. ā
