ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A photo study in red: A photo montage of photographs of just red garments in 16th and 17th-century paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago--swatches of history that contain some of its essences, memorialized through its use in photographs. Essentially, it is a "remix" of art history using samples, similar to samples from sound recordings. It provokes contemplation of its ontological aspects: what the original cloth was made of, the sitter that wore the garment, and so on. Technology facilitates the continual re-contextualization of art and music history at the micro-level: just one note or one bar in music, or one element in a painting. The source paintings are done by the artists Alessandro Allori, Bartolomeo Manfredi, Peter Paul Rubens, Bartolomé Estéban Murillo, Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri), Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Abraham Janssens, Jacob Jordaens) The conceptual idea is based on my "Just" series where I isolate one element and make that the subject of the work.

After an extensive career as a musician, I began working visually (primarily in graphic design, inspired by album art), then into painting and collage. I tend to work in series, using various constraints based on color pallets, particularly in my minimalist "Black, White and Red series", which also uses metaphors from music, for example, the "Interval Cubes" and "Color of Sound" projects. Today, I find myself working on an ongoing series of interrelated and interdisciplinary projects with an eye toward making fabricated and installation art for private residences, offices, and public spaces.
