About The Artwork

Inspired by The Sutton Hoo Ship Burial in South East England. It was a historical moment when archeology revealed a Viking ship buried in a mound in the year 545. It was the grave of a chieftain as many treasures, gold and garnet jewelry, cauldrons and chain mail were buried with the body. The soil had preserved exactly the impression of the boat down to the rivets although the wood had long decayed. The details of the hoard and the historical dig are showcased in the British Museum. It is here, also from publications where I learned about it. It fueled a body of work for a solo show. This is a giclee print of an original work that was in the Gallery exhibition.

Catherine grew up near the Moors and Dales of northern England and attended Art College near London for her BFA. She now lives and works in Austin Texas and London UK. Moving between countries challenges her sense of belonging yet serves as a portal into the greater human experience. Particulars of place and time each become her poetic layering of imagery. Her paintings juxtapose influences of geology with her personal participation in more remote and untamed landscapes of California, Peru, England, Ireland, France and Iceland. After graduating with an MFA from John F Kennedy University, Berkeley Annex, Ca., Catherine was grantee of the Sonoma County Emerging Artist Award. In 2018 her work, "Floeberg" and "Shelf Crack" won her a First Prize award from “Visions Of Science” exhibition at Bath Edge Arts, University Of Bath, England.
