About The Artwork

This drawing benefits from being float mounted against a white background in a simple museum quality black box frame. One of a series of drawings which explore the idea of a passage through nature to a spiritual salvation. I found the 'gap' significant, a portal around which the activity inside this dark malaise of undergrowth is framed. During the realisation of this series of drawings I began to move away from a wholly figurative approach and allow more room for interpretation. The hedge is no longer just a botanical object, and has become symbolic of our struggle to envisage a world beyond our immediate surroundings. It was drawn en plein air at Ashton Brook in North Somerset in 2013, and was a central piece in the New Charcoal Drawings exhibition at Centrespace Gallery Bristol in December of that year.

I was born in Brixton in 1981, and grew up in Donegal, later returning to the UK to study Art, Illustration, and Printmaking at the Ruskin School Of Art Cambridge. Drawing is at the core of my practice and forms the fundamental reference point upon which my ideas and practice is based. I draw either from memory or imagination, but mostly directly from life. Through careful study of a subject or topic I explore common themes which run through my work; identity, individuality, loneliness and love. My studio is currently based in Berlin.
