About The Artwork

"I sometimes think about what type of glasses I must've been wearing this whole time throughout my life... [Those glasses] were being formed and fitted to my face by every experience I had growing up... I was going through life wearing these glasses that are fitted to my face, the lenses are smudged, and I can only see life this one way for the longest time." —The Box I Live In by Corey Harper, "Kiara's Story" Our upbringings form the frame of the "glasses" we wear as we perceive life. Our views on relationships, love, and even ourselves are initially bestowed upon us by our caretakers and are ground zero for where our values form. Unfortunately, in some cases, this foundation is flawed, broken, or even traumatic. Despite this, some choose blind acceptance of these tumultuous circumstances and even find a permanent home in them—voluntarily sacrificing freedom, peace of mind, and identity for a false sense of comfort. The rose-stained glasses represent the subject's unconditional embrace of their nurture. The blind eyes symbolize ignorance to the truth while the thin blanket surrounding the subject represents a mockery of security grounded in their grim circumstances, which is echoed in the surrounding chorus of dying lilies. The black pentagon feature is a dark resemblance of a coffin, symbolizing the unfortunate resolution of following the bleak pattern of generational trauma through life and into death.

Anna Mikhaela Reyes is a contemporary artist based in Denton, Texas. After receiving her BFA in Drawing and Painting from Kennesaw State University, Anna focused her practice on the use of charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencil to elevate the romanticism of botany and the human figure. Anna's work explores themes in psychology, the flux of personal vulnerabilities, and the elusiveness of interpersonal connection. Common to her work is obscure symbolism as well as the intertwining elements of romance and melancholy—an acceptance that the most beautiful things in life are often bittersweet.
