"Midnight Falls" is one drawing from the collection called 52 Crows. 52 Crows was born on New Years Eve as a yearlong drawing challenge. The concept was really very simple, every Monday for the whole year I would draw a crow or raven related illustration and post it on my twitter account @BHHillustration. Why crows? Well they are intelligent social birds that appear in the mythology and folklore of almost every civilization and culture. Being opportunists and wide spread, they form a family of birds "Corvids" that most people will have encountered them. As you can imagine 52 drawings on a single theme is quite a task. So to keep me going for the whole year and inspire each illustration, I invited people to send me a crow related story, poem or snippet of folklore. Both illustration and writing being posted on my blog every Monday evening. http://www.bonniehelenhawkins.com/blog. The response has been was unexpected and overwhelming, with people sending me stories and messages of encouragement from all over the world. By the end of the year 53 people will have collaborated in this arts and literature project, myself and 52 writers - probably making this the largest collaborative none-funded social media arts project in the UK at the moment. This drawing was inspired by a story from David J Wing.

How it all started: Like most creatively inclined people, my passion bloomed from a single moment in my childhood. These moments come from the people or the places we love and they inspire us to try and create something beautiful. My moment was from when I was a young girl – around four or five years old – sitting in the early morning with my mother. I watched her as she lit a match and held it upside down so that it would burn as much of the wood as possible, then break off the phosphorus tip. With her charcoal and a piece of plain white paper she started drawing a portrait of me, and then my sister behind. I remember not only the drawing, but also the feeling of awe that rose in my chest, being so young I thought that what I was seeing was magic. To recreate something so true to life out of burnt wood and a white sheet of paper, to my mind was – and still is – fantastical. I can close my eyes and still see it, I think from there it all began. I want to be able to create magic like my mother was. I wanted to recreate that feeling of awe and amazement and its what I still aim towards. Whether I will ever feel like that goal is completely accomplished I cannot say, but knowing that my work has touched so many people like my mothers work touched me if enough to satisfy. We all have our moments that we treasure, and it’s important to keep them close. Surprisingly my first commission as a professional artist was when I was still in High School. I was commissioned to produce portraits of my fellow classmates. This was a huge privilege but also a nerve racking experience.
