About The Artwork

This series has been percolating in my mind for a very long time, always as kind of nest idea. When I actually started drawing the idea quickly was clarified and evolved into something bigger that seem to work on multiple levels. More as and window into the void or an eye in to soul. The center and the ring sometimes creating a vibration pulse. The nest idea was not completely gone, for a nest is the passageway from one stage of live to another. There is also a element of it feel like cell and in these troubled time that was a surprising addition insight. All that said my working style is one of experimentation as I have written in my artist statement on my website www.stuartlehrman.com/ Right now I am just working in black, white and shades of gray. But go forward I will be introducing color slowly, I have one almost complete with some very dark blue element. The idea of black and blue the color of the night or a bruise interests me.

My practice involves the dialogue between order and chaos. The process is a constant experiment with the physical properties of the materials I am working with-moving between addition and subtraction, making and unmaking. The art is made up of (mistakes or happy accidents) during the process, but these ‘mistakes’ are useful to make because they may lead little by little I hope to the small truths. My work is inspired by the natural and man-made phenomena I observe in the world around me. The Portal Series has percolated in my mind for a long time, originally focused on the idea of a “nest”. When I started drawing it morphed into something with broader meanings, including entry into a void, the eye the passageway into the soul, of course, a "nest' from one stage of life to another. My Road Rage photography series tackles these same problems and attempts to capture this same dynamic, through the lens of the camera. While out on the streets, I am always on the lookout for ambiguous accidents of beauty and power, ground into the common pavement.
