About The Artwork

This is a close up from a biro drawing I produced called 'Soul for Mammon' over 9 months. This piece was a response to visiting Sri Lanka for the first time, my adopted birthplace and documenting their flora and fauna. For more details on the larger work please see my website, may-ranjini.co.uk.

I am a freelance artist working as a painter and draughts-woman. Since graduating with a BA in ‘Fine Art Painting’ and an MA in ‘Art and Science’ I have been working on commission and pursuing digital art. Drawing has been my main art activity for at least the last 5 years, during which I have experimented with different techniques and subjects, including abstract patterns, marine organisms, botanical specimen, portraiture and life drawing. I enjoy creating using a range of materials and techniques, notably drawing and painting. This includes working with traditional and new media, including macro photography concentrating on portraiture, landscape and natural forms. I am currently developing pieces which combine traditional drawing with digital imagery, including working with Photoshop. Subjects My inspiration often comes from the outside, rural environment. Whenever I have the opportunity of exploring botanical gardens and natural environments, I make sketches, paintings and take photographs that focus on natural forms and patterns. I regularly use these observations as a basis for creating my own artistic images. This reflects my interest and recent MA combining Art with Science. I have also experimented with microphotography, using samples of plants and flowers taken from my garden or from the marshes near my home. I like to collect curiously coloured and patterned flower petals which under the microscope lens appear as delicate velvety surfaces which can be perceived as illuminated landscapes. Indeed, the cellular structures can look like stained glass windows. These too feed into my general artistic practice, both as subject and inspiration. Goals In the long term, I am determined to turn my passion for drawing into a fulfilling career, where I can use my skills to create something that people can enjoy and gain from. I believe in constant self improvement, and I am committed to developing my skills.
