‘Surveillance. Mother and Child’ Drawing

This is a drawing based on East German Stasi files. Ordinary citizens were targets for Stasi spies using secreted cameras. At a visit to the Runde Ecke museum in Leipzig, I took photos of photos in glass cases. Often very bad photography ....under exposed, over exposed, blurred etc but a fascinating record of the banality of the whole system. I liked the idea that people that were the subjects of these photos didn’t know then, and may still not now, and are now the subjects of artworks.
