Synergetic Form Print

'Synergetic Form' along with 'Souvenier' are graphite drawings done in the summer of 2009 as homage to my friend and mentor, the late Frank Nulf, one of Canada’s finest artists. His inky, mysterious and beautifully unsettling work inspired me as an impressionable, art student in the late 70’s when drawing as a practice was visceral, in fighting form and a movement of which Frank was a master. In those days, Frank was in the midst of creating his 'Box' and his 'Bog' series, 2 compelling bodies of work that suggest life, death, containment and transformation, In 2009, my drawings were created to honour and emulate Frank Nulf’s work, as part of a group show called 'Homage', held at the Cube Gallery in Ottawa. Materially, I utilized the same medium that Frank did and the haptic pleasure contained within the rendering process extended into a highly reflective and meditative experience. Thematically, the imagery of sinew, bone, fur, contained within a glowing, submerged box or ambiguously wrapped and bound reference both his 'Box' and 'Bog' series but also celebrates his life as a whole. The erupting flurry of synergetic threads reference the fission resulting between the past and present, and from one artist’s vision feeding another’s, all the more potent as the cycle of life has proven it’s case once again.
