This figure is the Portuguese Queen Dona Isabel, who made the "Miracle of the Roses". The King, D.Dinis, was informed about the charitable actions of Queen D.Isabel, and the expenses they entailed for the royal treasury. One day the king decided to surprise the queen on one of her usual walks to give alms and bread to the poor. He noticed that she was trying to disguise what was on her lap. The King asked the queen where she was going... and she replied that she was going to the monastery to decorate the altars. Not satisfied with the answer, the king showed curiosity about what she was carrying in her lap. After a few moments of confusion, D. Isabel replied: "They are roses, my Lord!". And on her lap appeared beautiful roses. The original drawing is not signed, as many others of the author at the time.
