About The Artwork

Michael Jordan’s shot over Craig Ehlo was significant because: It was the first massive game-winner of Jordan’s NBA career. It clinched the Bulls’ first round playoff victory and sent Jordan into even deeper stardom. It symbolized the beginning of the ascent of the Jordan-led Chicago Bulls. Previously the bulls had a looser reputation. It was one of the most memorable shots in NBA history, with six lead changes in the final minute and Jordan hanging in the air for a long while before releasing the jumper. It was an upset win for the Bulls, who had lost all six regular-season games against the Cavaliers and had a worse record. Michael Jordan is both legend and brand, his name is synonymous with top level excellence in any field. If one wishes to express that a patron is good at their art, we simply state they are the 'Michael Jordan' of that art. Kids across playgrounds and in gyms the world over strive to be 'Like Mike.' There is no pathway to that goal without talking the shot. She when I sat down to conceptualize my Legends of the Game series, of course Jordan was a sure fire to lead the series. While there are dozens, if not hundreds, of memorable images to depict, I chose 'The Shot' because it is one of the earliest images of Mike succeeding, while still an underdog. Today's underdog might be tomorrows legend. I hope this pop art, cartooned version of the Shot will hang in some kid's bedroom, or someone's mancave, as a reminder to get in the game, don't watch from the sidelines. Life is too short, take the shot. The legends of the game series is done thus far completely in color pencils on drawing paper. Perhaps future efforts might expand to pastels and acrylics, but for reasons I cannot explain, this art series has called to me in pencil.

My name is Jeremy Phelps and I have been an artist practically since birth. Though all kids are natural artists, most of us put down the artistic tools and 'grow' out of it at a certain age. I never did. I have always appreciated the animation in cartoons and games, the way Disney makes magic happen on the big screen, and mostly the way fine artists make us feel with their two- and three-dimensional extensions of themselves. I've always known that this is my gift and my place in the world, to be an artist. I love to experiment with different mediums and subjects. I can create beautiful landscapes with colored pencils, vibrant portraits with pastels, and abstract compositions with acrylics. I enjoy the challenge of switching between different techniques and styles, and I feel like each medium has its own charm and personality. Sometimes I wonder if I should focus on one medium and master it, or if I should keep exploring and learning new things. Maybe I am afraid of missing out on something, or maybe I am just too curious and adventurous. The same dilemma applies to my subject interest. I like to draw animals, women, celebrities, historical narratives, plants, and anything that catches my eye. I don't want to limit myself to one theme or genre, but I also don't want to confuse my audience or lose my identity as an artist. How do you balance variety and consistency in art? That's a question that only time will tell for me.
